Bruce FANFARRON for the San Diego Symphony

September 26, 2017 by Bill

The San Diego Symphony recently premiered a new concert opener by David Bruce. The composer writes about his work:

I was honoured to be asked by San Diego Symphony to write a celebratory fanfare in honour of their departing maestro Jahja Ling, who conducted the premieres of my Night Parade and the Violin Concerto Fragile Light. The former of these pieces Jahja also brought to Carnegie Hall for the orchestra’s debut there, as well as on their tour of China in 2013. I enjoyed working with Maestro Ling, who had a firm but gentle approach, and the orchestra has clearly flourished under his tenure, with a raft of excellent younger players joining and creating his legacy for the future.

The fanfare is a 3 minute work for full orchestra. It’s called Fanfarrón, the Spanish word, said to be the origin of the word ‘fanfare’, which translates roughly as ‘show-off’ or ‘loud-mouth’ – a reference to the character of the music of course, rather than the man himself, who is anything but!

David Bruce’s NOTHING premieres at Glyndebourne

February 5, 2016 by Bill

If someone you knew declared that life had no meaning, how would you convince them it does?

That’s the question a group of teenagers ask themselves in Nothing, a compelling new youth opera that premieres at Glyndebourne this February.

They decide that each of the group must give up an object that means something to them. This starts with toys and clothes, but things quickly escalate as the classmates go to ever more extreme lengths to try to persuade their friend there are things worth caring about.

In Nothing members of Glyndebourne Youth Opera aged 14-19 perform alongside professional singers. It is the latest in a line of pioneering youth operas that have premiered on the main stage at Glyndebourne.

The opera has been adapted from Danish author Janne Teller’s award-winning novel by composer David Bruce and librettist Glyn Maxwell. Their popular adaptation of Philip Pullman’s The Firework Maker’s Daughter wowed audiences in the UK and New York.

Bruce’s THE FIREWORK MAKER’S DAUGHTER at Royal Opera House

November 9, 2015 by Bill

David Bruce’s The Firework Maker’s Daughter returns to the Royal Opera House in December for a run of 27 performances at the Lindbury Studio. The work premiered in 2013 and was nominated for both an Olivier Award and a British Composers Award. The Daily Telegraph’s Michael White called it “the most utterly endearing, joyous and delightful show I’ve seen in ages”  and Opera Now called it “an intoxicating brew….The show is the operatic equivalent of a page-turner, ideally paced for an all-ages audience”

One of a select group of operas that have been performed on Broadway, The Firework Maker’s Daughter shares that honor with Menotti’s operas (4 of which ran on Broadway).

The performance had a profound effect on Garrett Harris from SanDiegoReader.com who said about the piece “It took me deep… I’m not sure where I was headed but it was a place I’ve never been to before with music… How can you like something that changes your perception of what music is capable of?… It’s beyond ‘like,’ it’s beyond ‘love.’ ” and Ken Herman at San Diego Story said “this Violin Concerto has a future,” calling it a “serious, probing accomplishment.”

New Carnegie Hall Commission for David Bruce

January 22, 2013 by Bill

Fresh from her title role in John Adam’s The Gospel According to the Other Mary, the wonderful mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor will premiere a new work David Bruce is writing for her as part of a US tour with soprano Jessica Rivera in October 2013. The new work, provisionally titled That Time with You, is a further collaboration with Glyn Maxwell, though here in rather darker and more sombre mode, with poignant lyrics reflecting on death and loss. Bruce continues his long relationship with Carnegie Hall, who has co-commissioned this work with Kelley O’Connor.

David Bruce appointed Associate Composer to the San Diego Symphony

January 22, 2013 by Bill

David Bruce has been appointed Associate Composer to the San Diego Symphony for the 2013/14 season. He will be writing three pieces for them, including a new work for the orchestra’s Carnegie Hall debut in October 2013, and a new violin concerto for autumn 2014 (with an amazing soloist, details are hush-hush, unfortunately). To kick off the association Bruce will be writing a chamber piece for mandonlist Avi Avital and we’ll be premiering the new work in May this year (details here). You can read an interview Avi gave to San Diego Jewish Journal talking about the collaboration here [PDF]

Bruce: The Firework Maker’s Daughter US/UK Tour

January 22, 2013 by Bill

Tickets for David Bruce’s chamber opera The Firework Maker’s Daughter are now on sale. The opera comes to the Lindbury Studios of the Royal Opera House, London from 3-13 April; and to the New Victory Theatre, New York from 3-12 May, as well as a substantial UK tour with performances in Hull, Huddersfield, Watford, Bury St Edmunds, Buxton, Oxford and Newcastle.

The opera is a retelling of Philip Pullman’ s fabulous and colourful story featuring the spirited young girl who risks everything to follow her true path in life.  Like Pullman’s work, I like to think it’s “suitable for young and old.”

The libretto is by Glyn Maxwell (whose book On Poetry is really worth checking out.)  Director John Fulljames and designer Dick Bird take the helm, along with shadow-puppeteers Indefinite Articles; and in the pit, two old favourites – Chroma in the UK and Metropolis Ensemble in New York. A great cast of Mary Bevan, Jamie Laing, Andrew Slater, Amar Muchhala and Wyn Pencarreg make this a show not to miss.
